A song from the Lake to Serie A: the history of Pulenta e galena fregia

No fan who sees a Como match at the Sinigaglia for the first time can avoid falling in love with the notes of Pulenta e galena fregia (“Polenta and cold chicken”), the Davide Van de Sfroos song which has become a true non-official anthem for our team. Not only will they hear it playing on the stadium loudspeakers, but they will listen to it being chanted from the Curva.

On the occasion of the last Serie B matchday the club and the artist collaborated on a reimagined version, mixed with the fans’ voices, to celebrate the unique bonds between the club, its history and its community. But how did Pulenta e galena fregia reach the stands of the Sinigaglia – and now Serie A – in the first place?

Let’s start by getting to know Davide Van de Sfroos (DVDSW), the pseudonym of Davide Bernasconi, a singer-songwriter from Tremezzo, on the Como Lake. DVDS chose Laghèe, the variant of Como dialect which is spoken on the eastern shore of the Lake, to put his stories to music. He wrote about local legends and larger-than-life characters from his area. He also wrote about smugglers: Van de Sfroos is not a Dutch name, but rather a pun on the dialectal expression “to go poaching”. Or, to word it better, to venture out onto one of the many smugglers’ pathways to nearby Switzerland, on the mountains that cradle the Lake.

Most of all, he wrote his stories with inspired lyrics, bringing his characters and the setting of his songs vividly to life with his imaginative metaphors and his unforgettable and ironic portraits. His songs let Como dialect speakers identify with their own language, the one the young had heard from parents and grandparents and rediscovered through his lyrics.

After an experience in the legendary Como punk band Potage in the mid 80s and after publishing the album Manicomi with a band named De Sfroos, at the end of the 90s Davide Van de Sfroos started his solo career. In 1999 he published Breva e Tivàn, an album which bears the name of two of the winds blowing over the Lake. It was an immediate success that extended well beyond local fame over the years, even bringing “il Davide” (the way locals affectionately call him) to the stage of the Festival di Sanremo in 2010.

His lyrics, tinged with dialect, and his rousing stories robbed the hearts of an ever-growing number of faithful fans, always ready to follow each of his concerts in the Como province, and even outside. Among them were numerous Como fans. At the time Como was living a golden era, with a double promotion which saw the club reach Serie A in 2002. Football and Davide’s music became a source of local pride, giving many locals the thrill of seeing two “Made in Como” realities achieving nation-wide recognition.

Among the songs of Breva e TivĂ n shines a gem of poetry called Pulenta e galena fregia, a song speaking of childhood nostalgia and melancholy. It soon became a fan favourite and, thanks to its irresistible chant, it reached the stands of the Sinigaglia. With a small change: Como supporters rewrote the last verse of the chorus, “cun’t el bĂźceer del vènn” (with a glass of wine), into “cun la sciarpa del Còmm” (with the Como scarf). This is how the story started. A story that has walked with Como football for a quarter of a century and that finally, in the next season, will see our fans teach this song, in our dialect, to other Serie A supporters.
